Bridal Fashion Week was fully back in swing last week in New York with runway shows, private salon-style appointments, and cocktail parties. The biggest takeaway? Wedding style is getting more diverse each season as brides are saying yes to multiple outfits for their weekend festivities. There are classic tulle gowns and lace getups for the main event, of course, but what stood out were the unconventional bridal separates, fashion-forward silhouettes (drop-waist anyone?), and the range of options to choose from for every type of bride and every type of wedding.

The ultimate cool-girl brand Danielle Frankel introduced menswear for the first time; there were newcomers like Yellow by Sahar who turned to bridal after working for ready-to-wear designers like Thom Browne, Tory Burch, and Marc Jacobs; and, of course, the veterans like Monique Lhuillier and Vera Wang who continue to build their cult following season after season. The highlight of the week was Meredith Stoecklein’s brand LEIN, which came back after a three-year hiatus. Stoecklein’s interpretation of courthouse ceremony and versatile second looks fill a gap in the current bridal market.

Though the Spring 2024 bridal collections will not be available until next year, we’ve rounded up some of the strongest trends of the season to inspire the 2023 brides shopping for their wedding weekend looks. From the more-is-more maximalist attitude to cool bridal separates and bold, unconventional colors to incorporate into your wardrobe, here are the seven takeaways from New York Bridal Fashion Week.

Lace Works Wonderfully On All Dress Lengths

There are always plenty of options to choose from for traditional ceremonies, but when it comes to the more intimate nuptials, brides are often left with ready-to-wear options that might not feel special enough. Markarian has hit this sweet spot for several seasons now with romantic white silhouettes that stand out from the guests’ looks, and Monique Lhuillier’s romantic tailoring is guaranteed to be a favorite amongst spring 2024 brides.

Think Separates For Your After-Party Look

Leave those skin-tight sequin minidresses behind and make a statement with a second look that feels elevated enough to wear again post-wedding. Danielle Frankel’s sequin set is chic enough for a black-tie New Year’s Eve party, and Wiederhoeft’s crystal-adorned corset can be styled with a pair of jeans for a night out of town. Party dressing can be daunting for thirty-somethings who left behind their going-out looks several years ago, but you won’t need to revert back to the bandage dress with these modern, elevated options.

Your Wedding Dress Needn’t Be White

Who says you have to wear white on your wedding day? More and more brides are opting for color, and bridal designers are giving us more of it each season. Think bold color and big silhouettes. Andrew Kwon’s latest bridal collection is the perfect way to include something blue, and Honor’s interpretation of modern bridal is always refreshing to see. Take a cue from Reem Acra with a colorful veil if you want to add a pop of color to your white dress.

The Wedding Suit Is Just As Chic As a Dress

Though bridal separates have been around for some time now, the silhouettes this season feel the most wearable and exciting beyond just the classic suit. Nadia Manjarrez, who recently launched her own bridal line after a career in evening wear, proves a pantsuit can still be romantic. British brand Safiyaa shows us an alternative to a bridal cape and makes a statement in an allover lace bridal suit.

Go For High Drama Silhouettes

Many brides might opt for classic, timeless silhouettes for their big day, but brands like Vivienne Westwood, Sebastien Luke, and Halfpenny London are challenging modern brides with dramatic silhouettes and a maximalist attitude. Make a statement in a big tulle cupcake gown and pearl adornments. Throw on a cape, wear big jewelry, and add a longer train–it’s your big day, after all.

Drop Waists Are Back

The drop waist is here to stay! It seems like an unconventional and potentially unflattering silhouette, but you’d be surprised at how many can pull this off. It’s the silhouette Audrey Hepburn wore in Funny Face, with the bodice curving at just the top of the hip before the skirt flares out. Zoe Kravitz modernized the silhouette in 2020 with her wedding dress and it’s a silhouette worth exploring for modern brides.
